Obsah

Hlavní hrdince Ally McBealové je dvacet osm let a je absolventkou práva na Harvardově univerzitě. Zatím je svobodná, přestože větší část svého života byla silně spjata s přítelem Billym Thomasem. Kamarádili se spolu od sedmi let. Hráli si dohromady na ulici, společně také prožili dobu studií a později se stali milenci. Když Ally byla vybrána ke spolupráci v prestižním právnickém časopisu Law Review a Billy ne, jejich cesty se náhle rozešly. Po nějaké době osud zavál Ally do "malé" advokátní kanceláře, kterou vede její známý ze studií - Richard Fish. Ten se v prostředí soudů a právníků pohybuje jako vychytralý žralok, který přesně ví, kde a kdy navázat ty správné kontakty. Právě on nabídne Ally profesní útočiště. A ironií osudu zde hned první pracovní den potká svého Billyho. Ano, skutečně - toho samého, s nímž se kdysi tak dlouho a důvěrně znala. Jenomže Billy je teď ženatý s krásnou a chytrou blondýnkou.
